THE LOST & THE LAST FILMPOEM

Mirroring the SHIMMER Filmpoem* ( 16:58’  2022-2024 ) originally created to feature as an integrated soundscape-videoscape inside FarmanFarmaian’s  GATES OF TURAN multivalent installation for the Kyrgyz Pavilion ( 59th Biennale Di Venezia ) - the artist’s filmpoem format layers repurposed sourced images over dedicated music and poetry delivering rhythmic abstract constructs inviting the viewer to a multisensorial trance-like experience within sound and image.

SHIMMER went to source its content from the artists journeys in Kyrgyzstan’s Tian shan range, in contrast THE LOST & THE LAST here derives filmographic black & white imagery sourced from within the mythical 1925 silent documentary Grass: A Nation's Battle for Life * following mthe Bakhtiari nomadic tribe in Persia as they make their seasonal journey from Anatolia to Khuzestan.

Bridging past to present, FarmanFarmaian here turns back to previous film productions such as Summer on the Caspian ( 2:31’, 2016  ) where super 8mm archival filmography was derived and transformed through a process of layered reprojections involving paint and sound. THE LOST AND THE LAST as part of the NOMADS OF PERSIA installation - proposes a similar approach.

THE LAST & THE LOST will premiere 09-10-24 on the occasion of London Frieze Art Week with Juncture Gallery* as a private preview to the official NOMADS OF PERSIA installation to open 08-11-24 at the Cairo Citadel for Something Else’s 4th Edition. L&L will additionally screen in NYC at the Museum of Arts and Design ( MAD ) on 12-12-24.

* SHIMMER ( Astral Nomad Edit ) is on view at the Itinerarte Gallery, Venezia through June 2024.
