“ Contemporary Art is finally revealing itself in Nomadic form, mirroring the post globalized cultural sphere where reconnects related to craft and timeless tradition clash with contemporary transformative vision, cultural conjectives, overlapping borders and the fusion of identities - powerfully interconnecting and creating the fundamentals of a planetary journey.”

Firouz FarmanFarmaian

“ Nomads of Persia is an engaging and insightful exploration of the endangered tribal cultures of the artist’s homeland - an ode to freedom that passes through the recovery and valorization of ancient practices and knowledge referring to a post-tribal and transnational dimension.”

Valentina G Levy, Co-Curator

PATHS TO PERSIA

FarmanFarmaian has been on the outposts of a transcultural movement creating an alternative sensation on the occasion of the 59th Biennale Di Venezia representing the Kyrgyz Pavilion with the Gates of Turan installation tagged by ArtReview as a Postribal Immersive Experience.

Engaging with the endangered tribal cultures of the artist’s homeland, NOMADS OF PERSIA sets out to disrupt and transform established narratives from a position of exile. As the next iteration of FarmanFarmaian’s explorations building on his 2022 Venice Pavilion representing a Central Asian nation - at long last FarmanFarmaian unveils the result of a powerful reconnection, recombining the nomadic heritage of his land of birth -  seen from the prism of a 44 year exile.

Conceptualized within the framework of his transformative Postribal blueprint - the site specific installation will weave Textile, Sound, Video and Tech in a single immersive experience bridging dialogues between past and future, east and west, archaic craft and contemporary practice.

THE LOST & THE LAST FILMPOEM

Mirroring the SHIMMER Filmpoem* ( 16:58’  2022-2024 ) originally created to feature as an integrated soundscape-videoscape inside FarmanFarmaian’s  GATES OF TURAN multivalent installation for the Kyrgyz Pavilion ( 59th Biennale Di Venezia ) - the artist’s filmpoem format layers repurposed sourced images over dedicated music and poetry delivering rhythmic abstract constructs inviting the viewer to a multisensorial trance-like experience within sound and image.

SHIMMER went to source its content from the artists journeys in Kyrgyzstan’s Tian shan range, in contrast THE LOST & THE LAST here derives filmographic black & white imagery sourced from within the mythical 1925 silent documentary Grass: A Nation's Battle for Life * following mthe Bakhtiari nomadic tribe in Persia as they make their seasonal journey from Anatolia to Khuzestan.

Bridging past to present, FarmanFarmaian here turns back to previous film productions such as Summer on the Caspian ( 2:31’, 2016  ) where super 8mm archival filmography was derived and transformed through a process of layered reprojections involving paint and sound. THE LOST AND THE LAST as part of the NOMADS OF PERSIA installation - proposes a similar approach.

THE LAST & THE LOST will premiere 09-10-24 on the occasion of London Frieze Art Week with Juncture Gallery* as a private preview to the official NOMADS OF PERSIA installation to open 08-11-24 at the Cairo Citadel for Something Else’s 4th Edition. L&L will additionally screen in NYC at the Museum of Arts and Design ( MAD ) on 12-12-24.

* SHIMMER ( Astral Nomad Edit ) is on view at the Itinerarte Gallery, Venezia through June 2024.
